With More Snow Forecast, Maine Energy Marketers Association Urges Mainers to Check Heating Systems

February 13, 2025, Brunswick, Maine –  With winter weather continuing to bear down on the state, the Maine Energy Marketers Association is urging Mainers to take a moment to ensure that their home and business heating systems free of snow and ice.  Blocked vents can trap carbon monoxide inside, creating a serious safety hazard. Additionally, if you use a heat pump, be sure to keep your outdoor unit clear of snow and ice to maintain efficiency. With delivery drivers working to ensure heating fuels are delivered as quickly and efficiently as possible, please keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Make sure your driveway is clear of snow and ice for the delivery truck.
  • Clear a path to oil fill pipes.
  • Flag your fuel tank so that drivers can locate it in the snow.
  • Clear any snow and ice from appliance exhaust vents to ensure proper ventilation.

"Maine winters can be unpredictable, and heavy snow can create serious safety hazards if exhaust vents become blocked," says Charlie Summers, President & CEO of MEMA. "Clearing snow and debris from vents ensures proper ventilation and helps to keep your heating system running safely and efficiently all winter long.”
